Up in the mountains that edge the Great Basin
it was whispered to me
by the oldest of trees.

Bristlecone Pine
— Gary Snyder
The "Bristlecone Pine" print is based on my sketch of a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of eastern California, part of the Inyo National Forest.
Bristlecone pines, growing just below the tree line in harsh conditions, are the oldest living organisms on Earth, with some surviving for thousands of years in the Southwestern U.S.
I’m captivated by the bristlecone pine’s gnarly bark and sparse foliage. Stubborn, uncompromising, and tenacious, they have a stark beauty. Their haunting silhouettes on craggy slopes evoke both emotion and imagination, and I never tire of sketching these ancient, rugged trees.
